The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (the District) engaged Geosyntec to support their climate resiliency strategic planning process. Geosyntec provided water resources and carbon accounting expertise to assist the District in creating project metrics to track progress towards their internal climate resiliency goals, as well as developing an efficient and effective project GHG emissions reduction tool to support the District’s vision of reducing GHG emissions by 90% by 2035 as compared to baseline. Geosyntec helped the District define each metric and create methods for quantifying them to compare every project undertaken by the District towards their goals. The decision matrix tool allows District staff to analyze, compare, and rank proposed capital projects by factors including annual energy use reduction, annual reduction of GHG emissions, total capital cost, annual operating cost, and cost per ton of GHG reduced. Geosyntec provided expert guidance on GHG Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions factors and GHG calculation methods for the tool development. Geosyntec also created a tool for estimating carbon sequestration values for various green infrastructure and water resources projects based on local and regional characteristics.
