Dr. Papagiannakis is a Professor and the past Civil Engineering Dept. Chair at the University of Texas at San Antonio after serving as leader of the geotechnical/transportation group at Washington State University. He has over 35 years of experience in the geotechnical aspects of pavement engineering, including mechanistic pavement modeling, material characterization and roadway energy harvesting. He has contributed over 100 journal publications in this area and he has co-authored the textbook Pavement Design and Materials published by Wiley and Sons (2008). He has served as the lead in many national studies (NCHRP, FHWA, ASCE) as well as State DOT studies (Washington and Texas). He has an extensive consulting record with companies such as Terracon, Fugro and WSP. He has won several research awards, including ASCE' Next Generation Transportation Award (2017) and the Geo-Institute's C.L. Monismith Award (2019). Dr. Papagiannakis is the founder and past chair of the Pavements Committee of the Geo-Institute. He serves as an Associate Editor for the ASCE Transportation Engineering/Pavements Journal. He has served as the Chair of several international conferences e.g., ICTI (Pisa, Italy 2014), AM3P (San Antonio, USA 2020). He holds a Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering from the U. of Saskatchewan and a PhD degree in Pavement Engineering from the U. of Waterloo. He is a Fellow of the ASCE and a registered Professional Engineer in Texas.
