Hippo Haven is the transformative second phase of Adventure Africa, a groundbreaking development at the Milwaukee County Zoo. This project marks the most significant physical change to the zoo since its establishment in 1961, reshaping 25% of its entire landscape. Phase I introduced an innovative elephant and mixed species habitat. The focal point of Hippo Haven is the hippo exhibit, meticulously designed to meet the updated standards set by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). This exhibit offers substantial improvements to the hippo habitat, featuring enriching elements and an intimate viewing experience for zoo enthusiasts. A remarkable 60,000-gallon hippo pool incorporates an underwater glass viewing wall, surpassing the scale of the former outdoor watering hole threefold. Furthermore, the hippos enjoy a more extensive environment complete with a cutting-edge filtration system and a sprawling 3500-square-foot beach, perfectly emulating their natural surroundings. An innovative life-support system has been implemented to treat and recirculate the pool water, conserving this precious resource while creating a superior living and viewing environment for the hippos. Complementing this, a dedicated hippo-themed children's play area offers educational displays on hippo research and conservation, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for these magnificent creatures.
