This presentation will focus on media design and procurement deliverables from the forthcoming EWRI Stormwater Media Filtration technical report. Three deliverables will be discussed: a unit operations selection tool, a media selection tool, and a Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) matrix. The unit ops selection tool will give designers and regulators a framework for which processes (infiltration, filtration, sedimentation) are recommended for varying pollutant loading and native soil conditions. Development of the unit ops tool is based on existing infiltration and treatment policy from across the country, including a current literature review on the interaction between stormwater and groundwater. When the unit operation of filtration is selected, the user will be directed to the media selection tool and select the filtration media that best aligns with pollutant removal and project goals. To demonstrate pollutant removal for different medias, the BMP database was screened to correlate specific media types to their respective water quality performance. Additional pollutant removal results for medias not in the database were also included if they were tested using similar and adequate monitoring protocols. Results from the BMP database screening and additional media performance data will be presented. Lastly, once the preferred media has been selected, the user will be directed to a QAQC matrix. Based on a nationwide literature review and survey of analytical methods used by media suppliers & stormwater manuals, recommendations will be made to ensure each media component is verified adequately to produce the expected water quality results. Using these three tools together can help regulators and engineers select and procure high performing media to meet water quality objectives.
