Portable (clamp-on) flow meters provide a simple, cost-effective method of flow measurement on pipelines of various (and varying) sizes. These meters are gaining popularity as regulations require more frequent and accurate flow measurements. However, meter manufacturers require significant lengths of straight, unobstructed pipe upstream and downstream of the meters to ensure a symmetric, fully developed flow profile. Analysis of testing in non-ideal conditions was done to examine the parameters to monitor and accuracies that can be expected in various non-ideal conditions.
