MMSD’s 2035 Vision includes capturing the first 0.5-inches of rainfall from impervious surfaces using green storm water infrastructure (GI). This goal translates into 740 million gallons of GI storage. MMSD’s operating permit includes capturing 50 million of these gallons by 2024. To achieve these ambitious goals, MMSD developed a public-private-partnership (P3) to scale up GI implementation within the combined and separate sewer areas. The P3 includes a GI evaluation process to vet GI opportunities on both public and private property, reach agreement on long-term GI stewardship with the property owner, and get the vegetation thriving before transferring maintenance to the property owner by including five-years of maintenance in the P3 contract. P3 payments are made after project construction defined by achieving agreed upon contract metrics. Attendees will hear how MMSD has accelerated GI implementation through this P3 approach to meet these ambitious goals.
