"Milwaukee Riverkeeper is a science-based NGO advocating for fishable and swimmable rivers throughout the Milwaukee River Basin. Milwaukee Riverkeeper works with the community to identify problems affecting our rivers, respond to concerns, and work collaboratively to find solutions so that everyone can access and enjoy our rivers.
Milwaukee Riverkeeper engages over 100 community water quality monitoring volunteers to collect water quality data each year, and compiles data from all organizations and agencies into an annual river report card to inform policymakers, land managers, and residents. Milwaukee Riverkeeper organizes the largest annual river cleanup in the Milwaukee area around Earth Day bringing together 4,000+ people to get their hands dirty and our rivers clean at the Milwaukee Riverkeeper Spring Cleanup. In 2023, the Cleanup collected 115,000 pounds of trash from our waterways. Through an Adopt a River program, Milwaukee Riverkeeper works with over 140 community groups to become more regular stewards of our rivers. The Milwaukee Urban Water Trail provides information on how to access Milwaukee’s waters and enjoy the recreational opportunities these waterways provide right in our own backyard. Milwaukee Riverkeeper seeks to influence and support the great planning, engineering, and construction projects that have improved Milwaukee area waterways, through their grassroots advocacy to inspire action and improve the community’s perception of these waterways.
